The District Coordination Committee – Anuradhapura and North Central Province Canal project join together in project implementation

An Awareness program and a site visit facilitated by Upper Elehara Canal Project(UECP) allies as North Central Province Canal Project (NEP) for the District Coordination Committee (DCC) – Anuradapura at NCP canal project office, Madatugama on 14.10.2020.

Mainly, The Member of Parliament and chairman of the DCC Mr. K.H. Nandasena chaired the meeting with the Deputy Project Director of NCP canal project, Eng. Senavirathna Banda. In this meeting, Mr. Uddika Premarathna (Member of Parliament), Additional Government Agent, Deputy chief secretary of North Central Provincial Council, Director of Planning, Assistant Director of Planning, District Forest Officer, and District Valuation officer participated this occasion. further, Divisional Secretary officials from Kekirawa, Galenbindunuwewa, Mihinthale, Thirappene, Horowpothana, Kahatagadigiliya, Palugaswewa, representative from Provincial Irrigation Department, Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, Department of wildlife conservation, NCP canal project technical staff, Project Management unit and consultancy organization participants were about 70.

The awareness program started at 9.30 a.m. by Senior Communication Officer –UECP and welcome address delivered by Mr. Shantha Darmasiri, Wildlife Management plane implementation officer, while the project background information and introduction were delivered by the DPD of the NCP Canal. Furthermore, a 3D animated video that explains about holistic view of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program and the other project pathways played. At the same time a detailed presentation about the NCP canal, presented by Eng. B.M. Mendis- Earth Resource Engineer, NCP.

After these all awareness sessions completed, time allocated for participants to ask their questions, doubt, and miss understanding about the project among the general public on this occasion. There were some questions about project implementation and those were answered by the technical team including DPD, Project Engineers, PMDSC – Tunnel expert, and Communication Specialist. Thereafter the awareness sessions concluded and participants facilitated visiting the sites.

Thereafter, participants came a straighter way to the Morogahakanda dam and engineers explain it in nutshell. Then the team visited to the UECP – ICB 01, construction site, and discuss the information with the technical team. Next, the team visit targeted the tunnel construction UECP -ICB 2A contract package, the proposed southern portal of to the tunnel, explained at the Konduruwawe area and the team visited to the northern portal at Mahameegaswewa and discuss the tunnel construction, special arrangements in tunnel construction and safety measures on human and environmental aspects explained by engineers and expert from PMDSC.

Participants well understood the NCP canal project and were happy about the awareness and the site visit.
