“The present government will take necessary steps to accelerate the NCP canal project

The Divisional Secretary Mihinthale chaired by M.P. Shehan Semasinsinghe (State Minister of Samurdhi, household economy, microfinance, self-employment, business development, and underutilized state resources development) has organized a meeting on 25th of September 2020, at the Conference hall of Mihinthale Divisional Secretary office, with relevant parties to discuss the present issue on water availability for the drinking water project in Mihinthale Divisional Secretary areas. Officials from the Irrigation Department, Water Board, drinking water project, Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, Predeshiya Sabah, North Central Province Canal Project and Farmer Organization participated in this meeting.

 

The main water source proposed for the above drinking water project is from North Central Province Canal allies as Upper Elehara Canal Project (UECP). But the construction work of the canal is still delayed due to various reasons, thereby the proposed drinking water project is facing difficulties in getting required water in the near future where they have completed about 70 percent of the drinking water project implementation works. The drinking water project in collaboration with the irrigation department proposed a suggestion to get some water from Mahakanadarawa reservoir for the time being, but there is a huge against the Federation of the Farmer Organization in the area.

The participants shared their ideas and concerns to overcome the present issue with the Minister. While addressing this meeting the state minister said that The Present government will take necessary steps to accelerate the NCP canal project works and will provide water for both irrigation and drinking purposes in 2025”.
