Work begins to construct two new reservoirs for North Western Province

Ministry of Irrigation signed the contract with China CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd. (CAMCE) for the construction of two largest reservoirs, Mahakithula and Mahakirula in North Western Province. The CAMCE was qualified for signing the contract as per the standard bidding procedure followed by the Ministry. The reservoir construction will be commissioned under the North Western Province Canal Project (NWPCP) or “Wayamaba Ela” and scheduled to be completed within two years.
The event of the contract signing was held at the premises of Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. Secretary and key officers of the ministry of irrigation and CAMCE’s officials participated in the event.
NWPCP is to supply Mahaweli water to the water scarcity areas in the North Western Province. Wayamaba Ela will augment the existing cascade including more than 350 mi-nor tanks and 8 major tanks by transferring Mahaweli water to the Province by diverting water for more than 12,500 hectares of land for agriculture in both Yala and Maha seasons. The project enhances the facilitation of access by the local people to safe drinking water, which can minimize the occurrence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that has spread across the area. 40,000 families will be benefited from the Wayamaba Ela Project.
These two reservoirs will store the Mahaweli water for proper diversion across the target area.
