A lesson sharing session with Ecosystem Conservation And management Project (ESCAMP) was conducted on 24.06.2022 in the conference hall of the PIU/North Western province Canal Project by the MWSIP aiming to expose related staff of the MWSIP on the similar activities to be implemented under the WMP of the MWSIP.
The participants from the MWSIP were Project Director, project Engineers, National coordinator/WMP implementation, senior Environment Officers, Environment Specialist and other related staff. The resource person was the Project manager/ECAMP.
The main objective of the session was to get learnt the implementation challenges the ESCAMP faced during implementation of permanent village electric fences, Paddy field fences and Radio collaring of elephants.
As the Project Director/PIU highlighted starting the session, WMP activities of the MWSIP have to be implemented ensuring the sustainability of the investment, the implementation issues faced by the other projects would be an assets to the MWSIP.
The key points highlighted during the session for timely implementation of the above activities were;
- Key aspects to be followed during preparation of Bid documents.
- Selection of Villages-This should be done on demand driven basis after screening the villages at different levels. The final selection needs to be done after overlaying of identified villages with the National Elephant Fence net work of the DWC. After finalizing the real geographical area, the villagers should be called for awareness sessions. A collection of baseline information data needs to be done.
- Suatainability of permanent village fences-This is the most important area that all the projects failed at present. It is required to discuss and agree up on the maintenance arrangement of the fences. Government staff involvement system at the field and Divisional Secretariat level for maintenance should be established.
- Establish and maintain GIS based data base for monitoring of progress.
- Sucessfulness of the Radio collaring program, it needs to pay attention on the collaring of elephants within a short period of time and using of collaring data for making decisions in managing HEC issues.
The lesson learning session was very useful for both projects.
