Vice President of ADB visits Kaluganga, Moragahakanda reservoir complex

A visiting team of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headed by Mr. Shixin Chen, Vice President of ADB inspected the Kaluganga, Moragahakanda reservoir complex on 9th January 2022 for reviewing the present progress of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program (MWSIP).

At the inset, Mr. Anura Dissanayake, Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation eloquently explained the need to transferring water to water stressed areas further affected by climate change. Secretary further explained that the climate change has become a core challenge for the economic, social, and sustainable development of Sri Lanka and there is a acute need for financial assistance to complete the planned water diversion projects to address the water needs of the target areas in facing the impact of climate change.

MWSIP is a key climate change adaptation initiative program that will help to secure much-needed access to water resources for agriculture, domestic and industrial use, and environmental flows in the North Central, Central, North Western, and Eastern Provinces, thus improving climate resilience and food security, and sustaining rural economic growth.

Mr Aiming Zhou, Advisor of ADB, Mr. Chen Chen, Country Director at ADB’s Sri Lanka Resident Mission, Eng. Sanath Ranawana, Water Resources Specialist of ADB, Eng. Aruna Nanayakkara, Transport Specialist of ADB, Eng. D.B. Wijayarathna, Program Director of MWSIP and Dr. Beau Freemen, Team Leader of Program Management Design and Supervision Consultant of MWSIP, and key officials participated at this visit.
