Tunnel breakthrough remarks the completion of excavation in “Tunnel 01” of KMTC

Excavation of first Tunnel section called “Tunnel 01”of Kaluganga – Moragahakanda Transfer Canal (KMTC) was successfully complete on 20th December 2020. The excavation was done in both inlet and outlet drives. very last breakthrough blast was done from inlet drive and this is the first successful milestone of the KMTC Project. The total width of the tunnel 1 is about 7m and the length is 1.9km.
Hardworking staff of the SinoHydro Contractor was able to achieve this milestone under the close monitoring and supervision of the tunnel experts of Project Implementation Unit (PIU) and Program Management Design and Supervision Consultant (PMDSC). Use of proper excavation methods with closes supervision made the environment and social issues minimize in this tunnelling. New Austrian tunnelling method is applied for this tunnel excavation.
6.0km long another tunnel in KMTC called “Tunnel 02” excavation is progressing at present and it is scheduled to be completed in mid of the year 2021.Whole construction of these two irrigation tunnels (tunnel-01 & 02) are expected to be completed by 2022.
With the completion of above tunnelling, KMTC will divert excess water from Kalugaga Reservoir to Moragahakanda Reservoir aiming to address water scarcity in the North Central Province.
