A team from ministry of finance joins the visit to project sites in MWSIP

\Key heads from several departments in the Ministry of Finance participated in the two-day exposure visit to observe the ongoing constructions in Uthuru Meda Maha Ela, Wayamba Maha Ela and Minipe Maha Ela. The visit was conducted on 25th & 26th February 2022 under the visiting schedule organized by the Program Management Unit (PMU) of MWSIP.
The key officers from the Department of External Resources, Department of Project Management & Monitoring, Department of National Planning, Department of Treasury Operation, Department of Management Service, and Department of National Budget proactively took part in the visit as major stakeholders of MWSIP.
The visiting team focused on the socio-economic and environmental aspects of the MWSIP in addition to the engineering and technical aspects. Accordingly, the team visited the completed new canals, ongoing canal & tunnel constructions, dam constructions, Anicut raising and measures taken for environmental safeguard. The officers of the Project Implementation Units (PIU) accompanied with the team in briefing the ongoing activities at each site.
National level stakeholders are involving constantly in the planning and implementation phase of MWSIP. Creating awareness among those stakholders is a factual need in achieving the milestones of the program since the MWSIP occupies largely in the water sector development in Sri Lanka. The objective of the visit was to make aware them of the whole program, implementation arrangements and current progress of MWSIP.
The Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program is the largest irrigation development program in the current National Irrigation Development Plan. It is also the final phase of the Mahaweli Master Plan. This major diversion operation is being carried out in five provinces across three main canals (Uthuru Maha Ela, Wayamba Maha Ela, Minipe Maha Ela) with the primary objective of meeting the agrarian and drinking water needs of the people who have been suffering for a long time.
Eng. DB Wijeyeratne, Program Director of MWSIP, Eng.Ranjith De Silva, Deputy Program Director, Eng. Ranjani Perera, Program Consultant, Mr. Subash Perera, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist and Mr.Kalana Wijethilake, Communication Specialist from the PMU of MWSIP and Eng. Ashoka Perera, Eng. Seneviratne Banda , Eng. Indika Kumara and several other officials from PIU represented joined for the visit according to the visiting schedule.
