The Asian Development Bank (ADB) fielded a loan review mission for the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program (MWSIP) from 14 to 25 November 2022. was led by Ms, Mio Oka , The Director SEAR at ADB. The Mission held discussions with the Ministry of Irrigation (MoI – the Executing Agency), Ministry of Finance (MoF) – External Resources Department (ERD), Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka (MASL), Department of Irrigation (ID), Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), the Program Management Unit (PMU) and Project Implementation Units (PIUs), and the Program Management, Design, and Supervision Consultant (PMDSC).
The Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation, Mr.U.C.D. Jayalal joined the mission team to review the construction progress of the MWSIP. The team inspected the ongoing constructions in North Western Province Canal Project, North Central Province Canal Project and Kaluganga Moragahakanda Transfer Canal Project. The mission focused for the challenges under this economic crisis and possible solutions in rolling out of the project activities. The secretary pointed out the need for making collective effort for completing the constructions and stated that he will extend his full support and guidance in completing the balance activities of the program. Sanath Ranawana, principal portfolio management specialist SAER at ADB, Eng.W.B.Palugaswewa Additional Secretory of Ministry of Irrigation, Eng. D.B. Wijayarathna, Program Director of MWSIP and Dr. Beau Freemen, Team Leader of Program Management Design and Supervision Consultant of MWSIP, Project Directors of Project Implementation Units (PIUs) and officers relevant attended the site visits.
