Strengthening Water Security: MWSIP Stage 2 Inception Mission

The Technical Assistance (TA) Inception Mission for the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program (MWSIP) – Stage 2 officially commenced under the leadership of the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation. The session brought together key officials from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), government representatives, and MWSIP Staff to drive forward this critical initiative.
This Mission focuses on strengthening collaboration, enhancing and understanding of ADB’s procedures, and providing valuable insights for the project’s feasibility study. Discussions covered important aspects such as assessing the availability of excess water to meet the North Central Province Canal’s requirements including Commercial Agriculture Development Program, evaluating the project’s economic viability, and exploring ways to enhance opportunities for local construction and consultancy firms.
With agriculture and sustainable water management among the government’s top priorities, efforts are being made to secure the necessary financing for MWSIP Stage 2 with ADB and Co-financers and ensure its timely implementation. This initiative marks a significant step in advancing Sri Lanka’s water security and agricultural development.
