Action Taken to Expedite Land Acquisition Process for NWPCP

To expedite the land acquisition process for the proposed constructions under the North Western Province Canal Project (NWPCP), a special steering committee meeting was convened by the Kurunegala District Secretary at the request of the Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program (MWSIP). Recognizing that all construction activities depend on timely land acquisition and that delays can unnecessarily extend the project timeline, the Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation has issued instructions to complete the process swiftly.

Detailed discussions were held regarding the ongoing land acquisition for the NWP canal system in the Polpithigama, Mahawa, and Ehatuwewa Divisional Secretariats. Eng. Nihal Siriwardena, Program Director of the MWSIP, emphasized the critical importance of accelerating water diversion under the program and highlighted the national significance of timely land acquisition for the project.

To ensure the necessary lands are acquired promptly, the District Secretary instructed that priority be given to speeding up the tasks to be completed by the Divisional Secretariats, Survey Department, and Valuation Department.

Dissanayake, Chief Surveyor of the North Western Province K.P. Pushpakumara, Divisional Secretaries of Mahawa, Ehatuwewa, and Polpithigama, Program Director Eng. Nihal Siriwardena, Project Director Eng. Indika Kumara, and ADB Advisor on Land Acquisition and Resettlement R.B.S.B. Dayaratne, along with several other project officials.
