Significant progress has been achieved in the construction of Tunnel-4 (T-4) under the North Central Province Canal Project. This tunnel section, approximately 1,100 meters in length, is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a conventional drill-and-blast technique.

Tunnel-4 extends from the northern tunnel portal to the northern tunnel outlet, covering the section between Chainage Km 54+300 and Km 55+400, in close proximity to Namalpura Village within the Madawala GN Division of the Palugaswewa Divisional Secretariat.

This section plays a critical role in connecting with the 26.6 km tunnel stretch excavated using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which runs from the northern portal to the southern portal of the canal system.

Construction Progress –

The contractor has recently commenced invert concrete works within Tunnel-4. To date:

Invert concrete has been completed up to Section 32, covering a cumulative length of 346.783 meters.
Crown and wall concrete lining works have been completed up to Section 8 (excluding Section 7), reaching a total length of 83.2 meters.

The Employer has instructed the Engineer to closely monitor both progress and quality, ensuring that construction activities meet the required technical and safety standards.
